Brain Imaging Study

UNC School of Medicine
Lead Researcher
Dr. Mark D. Shen

UNC School of Medicine is conducting a Brain Imaging Study

Children from 0 to 24 months of age

The goal of the study is to identify the earliest brain and behavioral symptoms of AS, to enable the possibility of detecting early biomarkers and therapeutic targets for potential clinical trials.  Participants will have a non-invasive MRI brain scan during natural sleep (no anesthesia or sedation), behavioral testing, EEG, sleep measures, and physical exam at each visit.

Requirements

  • Diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, any genotype
  • Currently under 24 months of age
  • First visit at UNC from 0 to 12 mo, depending on age at enrollment
  • Second visit at UNC at 24 months

Participants receive copies of all completed tests. Plus, all travel costs are covered (airfare, hotel, rental car, gas/mileage, meals) and up to $200 compensation.

What is MRI?

MRI (or Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a medical technology used to view the inside of the body without using X-rays or radiation. MRI can produce detailed 3D images of the brain, which is safe and painless.
